Rangefinder Not Reading? Common Problems and Fixes
Rangefinder not reading or giving wrong distances? Fix weak batteries, brush hits, jumpy numbers, blurry views and dim displays with these simple steps.

The short answer
Most rangefinder problems come from a weak battery, a dirty lens, the wrong target mode, or a target that reflects poorly. Start by installing a fresh battery, cleaning both lenses, and switching to “last target” or brush mode in cover. Brace the unit for steady aim, and try a larger or more reflective target. If it still fails, contact the manufacturer.

| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No reading or “- – -“ | Weak battery, target too far or poorly reflective | New battery, try a closer or larger target |
| Reading too short | Hitting brush or grass in front of target | Use last target / brush mode, find a clear line |
| Reading jumps around | Hand shake, small target | Brace on a tree or rail, use scan mode |
| Display dim or hard to read | Low battery, brightness setting, bright background | Replace battery, adjust display brightness |
| Blurry view | Diopter not set, dirty lens | Adjust eyepiece diopter, clean lenses |
| Fails in rain or fog | Moisture scatters the laser | Expect shorter range; range closer landmarks |
| Fog inside | Seal failure | Contact the manufacturer |
How we built this guide
These fixes come from manufacturer manuals and support pages, published reviews and common owner reports from hunters and archers. We did not test individual units for this article. Menus and mode names differ by brand, so check your manual for exact button steps.
Why won’t my rangefinder give a reading?
The most common reasons are a weak battery, a target that does not reflect enough laser light, or a target beyond the unit’s real-world range.
Start with a fresh battery. Many rangefinders behave oddly long before the low-battery icon appears, especially in cold weather. Then range something large and reflective, like a building, truck or rock face, at a moderate distance. If that works, the problem is your target, not the device.
Soft, dark, angled targets such as a deer’s flank in shade reflect much less laser energy than a bright, flat surface. That is why advertised maximum ranges are much farther than what you get on animals.

Why is my rangefinder reading too short?
It is likely hitting something in front of your target, like branches, tall grass or a fence.
Rangefinders send out a beam that widens with distance. In cover, part of that beam hits closer objects first. Most hunting rangefinders offer a “last target,” “distant” or “brush” mode that reports the farthest return. Switch to it in woods or tall grass.
You can also move a step left or right to find a clear gap, or range a nearby tree trunk at the same distance as the animal.

Why does the reading jump between numbers?
Usually hand shake, a small target or the beam hitting both the target and background.
- Brace it: rest your hands on a tree, shooting rail, pack or knee.
- Use scan mode: hold the button and slowly sweep across the target to see consistent numbers.
- Pick a bigger target: range the animal’s body center, or a nearby tree trunk.
- Check the mode: first-target mode may jump between near and far objects.
Why is my display hard to read?
Low batteries, a bright background, or the wrong display brightness setting.
Many rangefinders let you change display brightness or color. Turn it up for bright snow or sky, and down at dawn and dusk so it doesn’t wash out your view. A brighter optical system also helps; see the Vortex Razor HD 4000 for an example.

Why is the view through my rangefinder blurry?
The eyepiece diopter probably needs adjusting, or the lenses are dirty.
Most rangefinders have a diopter on the eyepiece. Look at the display reticle and twist until it is crisp. Then clean both lenses gently with a lens pen or microfiber cloth. See our lens cleaning guide.
Who this guide is for (and when to call support)
This guide is for you if your rangefinder gives no reading, wrong readings, jumpy numbers or a hard-to-read display.
Call the manufacturer if it fails on large, close, reflective targets with a fresh battery, shows fog inside, has a cracked lens, or will not power on. Many brands repair or replace units under warranty.
What actually matters for reliable ranging
- Fresh batteries: the number one fix. Carry a spare.
- Correct target mode: first target in open ground, last target in brush.
- Steady hold: brace whenever possible.
- Clean lenses: dirt scatters both the laser and your view.
- Realistic expectations: animal ranges are much shorter than reflective ranges.
Watch-outs
- Cold weather: batteries lose power quickly. Keep the unit and spare battery in an inner pocket.
- Rain, snow and fog: all reduce range. Range landmarks before conditions worsen.
- Battery contacts: corrosion or a loose cap can cause intermittent power. Inspect and clean gently.
- Eye safety: never look at the sun through a rangefinder, and don’t point the laser at people’s eyes.
- Drops: a lanyard or retractor helps prevent damage in treestands.
Which should you choose if it’s time to replace?
- Choose the Vortex Crossfire HD 1400 if you want simple and reliable, with strong warranty coverage.
- Choose the Bushnell Prime 1800 if you range through brush a lot.
- Choose the Vortex Razor HD 4000 if you need brighter optics for low light.
- Choose the Leupold RX-1400i Gen 2 if you want a smaller, lighter unit.

Common questions
Why does my rangefinder work on trees but not deer?
Deer hair absorbs and scatters laser light, so it returns a weaker signal than bark or rock. Try ranging the deer’s body center, or a tree next to it.
What battery does my rangefinder use?
Many use CR2 lithium batteries, but some use other types or are rechargeable. Check your manual or the battery compartment.
Do rangefinders work in the rain?
Yes, but with shorter range. Rain, snow and fog scatter the laser beam.
Can a rangefinder lose accuracy over time?
It is uncommon, but drops or damage can affect performance. Test it against a known distance, like a measured landmark, before each season.
